Elgin is a town with a population of 806 (2000 census) located in Kershaw County, South Carolina, United States. Education
There are a number of higher education institutes surrounding Elgin. The city of Columbia (approximately 20 miles away) offers a variety of choices such as Midlands Technical College, a two-year community college.  Also in Columbia is Benedict College, the nation's fourth-largest historically-black college. The University of South Carolina at Columbia is also in Columbia.  The school offers over 350 programs of study; it is over 200 years old and currently has over 19,000 students enrolled full time. Aside from Columbia just over 50 miles away, the city of Rock Hill is home to the University of Winthrop. This institution offers areas of study in the schools of arts and science, visual & performing arts, business administration and education. With over 100 different programs, the university offers 37 undergraduate and 25 graduate degrees.

Grade school students of Elgin are served by two school districts: Kershaw County School District and Richland County School District 2. Kershaw County Schools include Leslie M. Stover Middle School, Doby’s Mill Elementary and Blaney Elementary. Richland School district 2 offers schools including Pontiac Elementary School and Bookman Road Elementary. A huge event for this town is the annual Catfish Stomp, which takes place on the first Saturday of each December. Golf is a popular activity with numerous nearby courses. The Country Club at Woodcreeks Farms offers an 18 hole par 72 course. This private club is located at 300 Club Ridge Rd. Other courses include the Green Hill Golf Club, the Woodlands Country Club and the Country Club at Wildewood. Goodale State Park and Sesquicentennial State Park are both choice outdoor places to spend the day. Goodale State Park offers boating, canoing, kayaking and fishing on the Civil War-era mill pond. The park also has picnic facilities and a playground. Sesquicentennial State Park encompasses 1,145 acres, offering boating, fishing and swimming on a 30-acre lake. The park has a playground, picnic areas, adog park and various trails.
