Columbia is a city located in both Richland and Lexington County. With a population of 116,278 residents, it is the largest city and capitol of the state of South Carolina. Columbia was ranked as a top mid-size market for relocating families in the United States. It was also named one of “America’s Most Livable Communities,” by the non-profit Partners for Livable Communities (Washington). Northeast Columbia in particular has seen a large growth in the past decade. It is a part of the Richland School District 2 which offers high-performing schools. North East Columbia is also in a convenient location just 19 miles from downtown Columbia.

The city of Columbia offers a terrific selection of higher education institutes. The University of South Carolina at Columbia is a great choice offering over 350 degree programs. It is over 200 years old and currently has a full-time student enrollment of over 19,000. Benedict College is the fourth-largest private historically-black college/university in the United States. The college has various areas of study offering 30 majors as well as 28 different degrees. As of 2007, Benedict College had a total student enrollment of 2,641. Midlands Technical College is a public two-year community college and is a part of the South Carolina Technical College System. Other options include Allen University, Columbia College and the Columbia International University. Northeast Columbian students are served by a number of excellent schools in the Richland Schools District 2. Richland Northeast High School received the Blue Ribbon award twice and was named a School of Promise in 2002-2003. It was also named a Palemetto Gold School and recognized as one of the country’s top 4% for AP courses (Newsweek). )ther schools include Summit Parkway Middle School (National Blue Ribbon) and Forest Lake Elementary (Palmetto Gold Award 2002-2003).
here are many parks in the North East Columbia area, including Killian Park, North Springs Park, Polo Road Park and Meadowlake Park. These are all great locations to get active outdoors. Sesquicentennial State Park is wonderful place to take the family and spend the day. This 1,145-acre park offers boating, fishing and swimming on a 30-acre lake. The park also has a playground, picnic areas, a dog park and various trails for visitors to enjoy. For the shopping enthusiasts check out the Village of Sandhills. This impressive center has over one million square feet of retail space. |
